Wtf is going on with my puffer fish?

my 20 gallon brackish tank has 2 small green spotted puffers in and one of their tails is completely squashed!! how the hell did this happen? it couldnt have been something fallen on it cause its a bare bottom tank with nothing in, because i have a fish house and im selling them. so what could have caused this to happen??
