There are a limited number of dyes that can be made from natural products at home and most of them involve boiling bark or nut shells for long periods and then involve using a mordant to make them stick. the reason RIT dyes have sold for decades is that they are reliable and uniform and fairly easy to use. They are in fact, aniline chemical compounds of some complexity.
